Kwara wins National Junior/Cadet, team open table tennis tourney

As Tab-K pledges sustained support to sports

Kwara state sustained its dominance in table tennis in Nigeria, especially at the youth level, as it won the maiden National Junior/Cadet table tennis Mixed Team Open Championship concluded at the Indoor Sports Hall of the Kwara State Stadium Complex, in Ilorin.

The tournament was organized by the Kwara State Table Tennis Association, with the support of Tab-K Foundation.

Parading the likes of Farouk Hassan, Ahmed Aishat, Awwau Saidu, Fabunmi Matthew, Yunus Afeez and Abdulfatai Abdullahi in the Cadet class, as well as Aiyelabegan Shukrat, Jimoh Rofiat, Falana Iyanuoluwa, Waris, Fatai and Orok in the male and female categories of the Junior class, Kwara dominated the competition which had states like Bayelsa, Oyo, Delta, Cross Rivers, Kogi, Ogun states and the FCT competing for honours.

Oyo, Bayelsa and Lagos states came second, third and forth in that order.

The Director of Sports, Mallam Tunde Kazeem, who said that Kwara is home of table tennis commended the association and Tab-K Foundation for supporting youths and sports development.

Mallam Kazeem, who said that all the associations have been charged to go back to the grassroots to discover more talents added that the competition was part of the sporting activities lined up as part of the celebration of Governor Abdulrazaq Abdulrahman’s 100 days in office.

The competition was also used to celebrate the birthday of Hajia Folashade Fausat Tijani.

The Chairman of the table Tennis Association, Shola Owolabi said that his association, at inception, set a goal of organizing national competitions, which they intend to stage every year.

He added that the second edition next year will include the Senior and para table tennis events. Owolabi, who is Board member, Nigeria Table Tennis Federation (NTTF) and co-sponsor of the event therefore, commended Coach Kehinde Aiyelabegan, the Secretary, Shade Asaju and the other officials, as well as other members of the association.

He also commended the support of Engr. Tijani Abdulgafar Kayode and the wife, Hajia Folashade Fausat Tijani towards the development of table tennis in the state and beyond.

The co-sponsor, Engr. Gafar pledged to continue to use the Tab-K Foundation platform to better the lots of the youths in the state.

While congratulating his wife on her birthday, he commended the table tennis association for keeping the youths busy meaningfully, adding that his Foundation is ready to partner any relevant association, in developing and empowering the youths, in line with its objectives.

Among those who witnessed the final ceremony are the Olukotun of Ikotun, Oba Razaq Abioye, Arch. Jide Adams, Director, PPU, Unilorin, the national Table tennis coach, Nasiru Bello, the Director of Sports at the Ministry of Sports, Mallam Shola Shehu and others, all of whom joined the celebrant, Hajia Folashade Fausat Tijani to cut the special birthday cake provided by the association.
